Imagine this: Dressed in costume, you pull your car up to the starting line at Toyota Speedway in Southern California.
Most Awesome Road Trip Ever? Meet The ‘Rental Car Rally’
You’re handed a briefcase containing a bottle rockets, eggs, smoke bombs, condoms, cigarettes and the like. And you receive a booklet containing the location of the finish line for the event – plus a list of checkpoints you must hit along the way.
Sounds wild, right? This isn’t some dare with your frat buddies, though – this is an event in the “Rental Car Rally,” the latest of which departs Feb. 25 from just outside Los Angeles and ends at Northern California’s Lake Tahoe.
It’s sort of like a combination between the Amazing Race and the coolest road trip ever.
The object of the rally is not to get to Tahoe the fastest (the organizers don’t necessarily encourage people to race), but to arrive with a combination of the lowest odometer rating and the best costume/car style.
For example: One team showed up with a Back to the Future-style DeLorean, the driver dressed like Marty McFly.
Oh, and it’s a good thing if you use your eggs and smoke bombs to screw with other teams along the way. Hijinks are encouraged.
The overnight trip is expected to take approximately 12 hours (teams must have photographic evidence of reaching all of their checkpoints). Upon arrival the next morning/early afternoon, the teams re-join for one big party.
The winner, by the way, gets $1,000 and a golden gas pump handle trophy.
Cost of a rally entry is $179 – and you can even use your own car, if you want. You can check out all of the info at the Rental Car Rally web site (and if you decide to participate, let us know!).
