Dale Earnhardt’s Crash At Daytona: A Silent Third Lap To Honor The Intimidator

Dale Earnhardt will be recognized on the third lap of the Daytona 500 today, 10 years after he was killed in a final-lap crash at Daytona International Speedway.

In some ways, this will mark the end of Earnhardt tributes for awhile. People close to Earnhardt – including son Dale Earnhardt Jr. – have expressed a desire to honor the Intimidator, but then move on.

“Moving on” isn’t meant in a bad way, but to simply continue forward and not let the tragedy of Earnhardt’s death continue to linger over the sport into the next decade.

On the third lap of today’s race, FOX will go silent. The broadcasters won’t call any of the action, and fans will be encouraged to hold up the ‘3’ sign – three fingers in the air.

His family and friends have all said they feel this is a fitting tribute to Earnhardt Sr. But afterward, the broadcast and the race – as life itself – will go on.
