Dale Earnhardt Jr. Gets Most Crowd Noise Before 2011 Daytona 500

New season, same Dale Earnhardt Jr. Prior to the 2011 Daytona 500, the “Gluckometer” (a fan measurement of crowd noise using a decibel meter) recorded the sport’s most popular driver getting the most overall cheers today.

Kyle Busch was second – he received all boos, as usual – but there was a huge gap between Busch and third-place Jimmie Johnson (somewhat surprising).

Johnson and the rest of the top 10 drivers were relatively closely bunched together. For some reason, the crowd wasn’t quite as loud as we expected.

Maybe they just needed to get warmed up for the start of the season.

Driver dB Type of Noise Comment/Explanation
1 Dale Earnhardt Jr. 89.4 Cheers Dale dominates Daytona decibels
2 Kyle Busch 86.8 Boos New season, but Kyle still villain to fans
3 Jimmie Johnson 83.1 Boos No love for five-time
T4 Jeff Gordon 82.8 Mixed Still a divisive figure for fans
T4 Jamie McMurray 82.8 Cheers Defending Daytona 500 champ
6 Michael Waltrip 82.7 Cheers Sentimental favorite
7 Kasey Kahne 82.6 Cheers A lot of new Red Bull fans
8 Tony Stewart 82.5 Cheers Smoke's supporters show up
9 Carl Edwards 82.3 Mostly cheers Some still haven't forgiven him for BradK wrecks
10 Mark Martin 82.1 Cheers Not as many cheers as usual for veteran
