A lack of sponsorship has cost Michael Waltrip Racing another young driver.
Ryan Truex Signs With Joe Gibbs Racing For Six NASCAR Nationwide Series Races
Less than a year after Trevor Bayne left the MWR umbrella when funding for his Nationwide ride dried up, Joe Gibbs Racing announced Tuesday it has signed Ryan Truex away from MWR for six Nationwide races this season.
Truex, the 19-year-old brother of NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver Martin Truex Jr., hasn’t raced since early June. But he’ll be back in the car on Sept. 3 at Atlanta thanks to his new deal.
JGR said Truex will drive its No. 20 car in five more races as well: Richmond, Chicago, Dover, Kansas and Phoenix.
“His family has a great history in our sport and he has really proven himself with the opportunities he has had thus far in his young career,” JGR president J.D. Gibbs said. “When you look at what he’s already achieved in the K&N Series and with the opportunities he has already had in Nationwide, we’re looking forward to him accomplishing great things with our team.”
Truex has won the last two K&N East Series championships and has five K&N wins to his credit. He said he was “honored” to drive for JGR but also said he appreciated his former team.
“I’d like to thank Michael Waltrip Racing for their support over the past few years,” he said. “Without them, I wouldn’t be in this position as a driver.”
A sponsor wasn’t announced for his ride, and JGR said “opportunities for partnership” are still available.
