2012 Indianapolis 500 Ticket Features Dan Wheldon Image

The Indianapolis 500 ticket traditionally features an image of the previous year’s race winner, but the 2012 edition figures to carry special significance.

This year’s Indy 500 ticket, revealed Tuesday, shows the late Dan Wheldon pouring milk on his head in Victory Circle, arms raised in triumph, after his improbable win last year. The two-time 500 champion was killed less than five months later in a crash at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

“Winning the Indianapolis 500 was a dream of Dan’s since he started racing, and he was proud to represent the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the Indy 500 after he won it the first time in 2005,” Wheldon’s widow, Susie, said in a statement. “But winning it the second time, in such dramatic fashion with a new team, was something Dan cherished so deeply because he really appreciated another chance to compete at the race that meant more to him than any other.”

This year’s 500 (May 27) figures to be one of the most emotional races in Indianapolis Motor Speedway history, because it will serve as both the “Greatest Spectacle in Racing” and a remembrance of the 2011 winner who will not be present to defend his title.
