If you log on to the Google home page today, you’ll see a curious link that reads, “Driving change: get up to speed on our winning new partnership.”
April Fools! NASCAR, Google Team Up For Self-Driving Car Joke
When you click the link, you’ll be taken to a page “announcing” a new deal between Google and NASCAR in which the Sprint Cup Series will now use Google’s self-driving car technology for races.
The drivers, it seems, have been rendered obsolete.
Undoubtedly, some knuckleheads out there will actually be fooled by this joke. We hope you weren’t.
But even if you recognize it’s a fake, you have to like the way Google and NASCAR went all-out to sell the partnership.
It’s certainly worth spending a few minutes flipping through the slides explaining how the technology works and the explanations for why Google created it.
“Humans cause the vast majority of traffic accidents and experience 100 percent of all traffic annoyance,” one slide reads.
The best part is the video NASCAR created and posted on NASCAR.com. It features drivers Clint Bowyer, Brad Keselowski and Jeff Gordon giving interviews about the self-driving car.
“You know, the driving part was just too much,” Keselowski said in the video. “I needed a break every once in awhile.”
