Indy 500 2012: 13 Teams Fined For Inspection Infractions

Following Sunday’s qualifying session for the 2012 Indianapolis 500, IndyCar announced it found 18 infractions between 13 teams during pre-qualifying inspections. The 13 teams were penalized a combined $275,000.

Ryan Briscoe, who won the pole during Saturday’s qualifying, was among those penalized. Briscoe and his Penske Racing team were fined $15,000 for violating the brake rule for using unapproved brake pads. James Hinchcliffe and Ryan Hunter-Reay, who will both start on the front row along with Briscoe, were also fined for pre-qualifying infractions.

The severity and number of fines surprised some, including Briscoe.

“It’s surprising because we haven’t seen much of that in the past,” Briscoe said. “But I think we are seeing a new guy in charge of the rules now, and maybe in the past, some things have been let past, and I think it’s good that teams are being penalized for not abiding by the rules 100 percent. Rules are there to be followed, rules are made to be enforced and they should be.”

Jean Alesi of Fan Force United drew the largest fine of $50,000 for violating a weight rule.
