NASCAR At Dover 2012: Crash Takes Out Tony Stewart, 11 Other Cars (Video)

Fans lamenting the lack of cautions and multi-car accidents didn’t have to wait long to get what they’ve been seeking when, just nine laps into today’s FedEx 400, a 12-car incident erupted off of Turn 2.

The pileup resulted from contact between Landon Cassill and Tony Stewart, who both turned sideways, leaving nowhere to go for the cars behind them. Among those collected were Cassill, Stewart, Juan Pablo Montoya, Casey Mears and Regan Smith.

“I was real loose off anyways and I didn’t even feel him (Stewart) touch me and I don’t know if he did,” Cassill said when interviewed by FOX in the garage. “Tony is one of the most patient drivers, especially at this part of the race. If he even touched me or he didn’t it, when you have a car there (on your rear bumper) it gets you real loose and I was already loose to begin with.

“Tony is a super-patient driver and one of the best; it’s just too bad we tore up that many race cars.”

The accident, which necessitated a red flag for nearly 20 minutes, was the first accident involving three or more cars since Talladega (three races ago) – a span of 768 laps.

Stewart when interviewed seemed to place blame on Cassill for coming down on him and said it was “just a crappy weekend all the way around.”
