Keeping with its practice of allowing winning cars to retain a victory even if they’re found to be illegal, NASCAR docked Austin Dillon six points on Monday after his Nationwide Series car failed post-race inspection at Kentucky.
Dillon dominated the Kentucky Nationwide race for his first win in the series, but his car was found to be too low when NASCAR officials examined it after the race.

Since Dillon had led the Nationwide Series standings by two points, he fell out of the lead after the penalty. Dillon now trails points leader Elliott Sadler (his Richard Childress Racing teammate) by four points.
Crew chief Danny Stockman was also fined $10,000 for the incident. Stockman was already on NASCAR probation for an earlier incident, and his status is unchanged.
Here are the rules Dillon’s team broke:
• 12-1 (actions detrimental to stock car racing)
• 12-4J (any determination by NASCAR officials that race equipment used in the event does not conform to NASCAR rules)
• 20A-12.8.1C (body height requirements -- car failed to meet the minimum rear car heights)
