NASCAR At Pocono 2012: Showers, Storms Possible Sunday For Pennsylvania 400

Showers and storms remain in the forecast for this weekend’s NASCAR races at Pocono Raceway. We could still get the race in on Sunday for the Sprint Cup series but it boils down to timing of an approaching cold front.

It will be very warm and humid for all activities Saturday. The forecast for all activities today looks mostly dry but there could be a few isolated showers and storms that develop during the afternoon. Highs will reach the mid to upper 80.

The main concern is Sunday as we track a cold front that will move out of the Great Lakes and into the Mid-Atlantic and northeast late Sunday afternoon and into Monday. The wild card for Sunday’s forecast will be timing of the cold front and if there is any storm development out ahead of the front.

Best-case: Cold front is delayed until late Sunday afternoon or evening and there is minimal precipitation development before the front so we can get the race started and hopefully finished.

Worse-case: Cold front arrives early to mid afternoon with strong showers and storms preventing the start or keeping the race from getting to halfway.

My Forecast: I think we will see something in between the two scenarios. Likelihood of starting the race Sunday afternoon is seventy percent or higher. Showers and storms start to form as the afternoon wears on making the odds of getting to halfway around fifty to seventy percent. Getting the whole race complete on Sunday looks to be in the forty to sixty percent range. It will all come down to timing of the cold front and what develops before the front Sunday afternoon but it will rain at some point on Sunday.
