NASCAR Kansas 2013 qualifying results: Kevin Harvick speeds to first Cup pole since 2006

Kevin Harvick claimed his first Sprint Cup pole position in seven years Friday at Kansas Speedway.

Breaking a streak that hadn’t seen him win a pole since 2006, Kevin Harvick set the fast time (187.526) in qualifying Friday for Sunday’s Hollywood Casino 400 at Kansas Speedway.

It was just the sixth pole in Harvick’s career, which began in 2001 and spans 460 starts, and the first for Richard Childress Racing since 2007, when Clint Bowyer won the pole at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

“It’s been forever, I think 2006,” Harvick said. “... I think the most exciting thing is just the first pit stall. We know this race is going to have a lot of pit strategy and being able to have that down there is definitely going to be worth qualifying first.”

Rookie Ricky Stenhouse Jr., Jimmie Johnson and Penske Racing’s Brad Keselowski and Joey Logano round out the top five.

Sprint Cup Series points leader Matt Kenseth, who leads Johnson by eight points, qualified seventh. Third-place Kyle Busch, who has never finished better than seventh at Kansas in 13 career starts, qualified 18th.
