Tony Stewart has third surgery on broken leg
Tony Stewart had a third operation on his broken right leg Monday, but is still expected to return in time for the start of the 2014 NASCAR season.

The operation was characterized as a “proactive measure” by the team and will not impact Stewart’s readiness for the start of the 2014 season. The surgery Monday was to examine and close a wound on his right shin.
Stewart, a three-time Cup champion, broke his leg in two places Aug. 5 in a sprint-car crash at Southern Iowa Speedway. He had an initial surgery immediately following the accident to stabilize and clean the wound. A second surgery was performed Aug. 8 in which a metal rod was inserted inside the tibia.
When Stewart met with the media for the first time since his injury Sept. 3, he said he didn’t expect to have any more surgeries.
The 2014 Sprint Cup season begins with the Daytona 500 Feb. 23 at Daytona International Speedway.
