Matt Kenseth earned the pole for the final race of the 2013 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season, the Ford EcoBoost 400, by posting a speed of 177.667 mph during qualifying on Friday.

Kenseth, who enters the race 28 points behind points leader Jimmie Johnson, will be joined at the front of the starting grid by Kurt Busch. Johnson will start on Row 4 alongside Martin Truex Jr. after finishing seventh in qualifying.

The pole was Kenseth’s third of the season. He was the No. 1 qualifier in back-to-back races earlier this season and took the checkered flag in one of those, winning the STP 400 at Kansas Speedway on April 21. Kenseth’s seven victories this season is tops among all drivers. He’ll need to secure an eighth win, plus lead the most laps and have Johnson finish 23rd or worse without leading a lap, to take home the Cup championship.
