Seven-time Formula One World Champion Michael Schumacher suffered a cerebral hemorrhage and is in critical condition following a skiing accident Sunday in the French Alps.

The 44-year-old was diagnosed with “head trauma with coma” which required “immediate neurosurgical treatment,” according to the hospital where he was being treated.

Schumacher was skiing in the town of Meribel, France when the German fell and struck his head on a rock. The French Mountain Gendarmerie said Schumacher was wearing a helmet and did not lose consciousness. He was airlifted to a nearby medical facility before being transferred to the University Hospital of Grenoble.

An avid skier, Schumacher is widely regarded as one of Formula One’s great drivers, winning seven championships -- including five consecutive with the legendary Ferrari team. He is Formula One’s all-time wins leader with 91 victories in a career that spanned 19 seasons.

After retiring in 2006, Schumacher returned in 2010 with Mercedes and drove for three additional years with middling success before retiring permanently last December.
