The NASCAR Sprint Cup standings always looks a little odd after the first few weeks of the season. Daytona and Phoenix produce strange results and the true shape of a season does not take shape until a few weeks into the campaign.
2013 NASCAR Point Standings after Las Vegas race: Jimmie Johnson maintains top spot
That was the case following Sunday’s race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Several expected title contenders, including Kasey Kahne, Kyle Busch and Martin Truex Jr. all entered Sunday’s race outside of the top-30 but gained considerable ground after all three finished in the top-10.
Jimmie Johnson continues to lead the standings after finishing sixth on Sunday. He leads defending champion Brad Keselowski by five points with Dale Earnhardt Jr. just 10 markers behind. Johnson, Keselowski and Earnhardt are the only three drivers to start the season with three top-10s.
The biggest gainer was Kahne - who moved up 17 spots to 14th - while Kyle Busch and Martin Truex Jr. broke out of the top-30 to 17th and 22nd respectively.
