NASCAR Las Vegas 2013 qualifying: Drivers race for pole position Friday

NASCAR revs up for Sunday’s Kobalt Tools 400 in Las Vegas with qualifying on Friday.

USA TODAY Sports

The NASCAR Sprint Cup series gears up for the Kobalt Tools 400 on the Las Vegas Motor Speedway this Sunday, beginning with qualifying laps on Friday.

Qualifying starts at 6:40 p.m. ET on Friday evening, as drivers will spin two laps around the track. The qualifying runs can also be seen on the SPEED channel.

After two races and a win in the Daytona 500, Jimmie Johnson currently sits atop the Sprint Cup standings with 90 points. Right behind him are Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Brad Keselowski, who each have 82 points in second and third place, respectively. Both Earnhardt Jr. and Johnson race for Hendrick Motorsports.

Carl Edwards, winner of last Sunday’s Subway Fresh Fit 500 in Phoenix, is 11th right now in the points standings with 59. He qualified in 15th place for that race.

The Kobalt Tools 400 begins Sunday at 3 p.m. ET, following the Sam’s Town 300 -- part of the NASCAR Nationwide Series -- on Saturday afternoon.

The full NASCAR schedule can be found here.
