NASCAR Kansas 2013 qualifying: Jimmie Johnson looks to increase points lead

The Sprint Cup Series hits the Kansas Speedway this weekend as Johnson looks to increase his lead in the Sprint Cup standings.

Qualifying for the 2013 STP 400 at Kansas Speedway is scheduled for Saturday. With the Sprint Cup standings jumbled throughout the top 10 early in the season, all drivers will be looking to secure the pole position for Sunday’s race around the 1.5-mile track.

Jimmie Johnson enters Kansas on top of the Sprint Cup leaderboard with 269 points. Kyle Busch is 18 points back and in second. Greg Biffle (-30), Brad Keselowski (-34), Carl Edwards (-35), Dale Earnhardt Jr. (-35) and Kasey Kahne (-37) currently round out the top seven. All other drivers are at least 60 points back.

For those who have struggled in the early going of the season, like two-time Kansas champion Tony Stewart, this weekend will give them a chance to make up some ground.

Last year, AJ Allmendinger won the pole with a top speed of 175.993 mph. Allmendinger went on to have engine troubles on the 44th lap and ended up finishing 32nd. Kevin Harvick finished right behind Allmendinger in qualifying at 175.747 mph, with Joey Logano, Denny Hamlin and Mark Martin rounding out the top five.
