NASCAR Nationwide Series at Road America lineup: AJ Allmendinger earns pole

AJ Allmendinger earned his first pole in nine career NNS races by topping the qualifying session at Road America on Saturday.

Jerry Markland

AJ Allmendinger earned the top spot in the lineup for the Johnsonville Sausage 200 at Road America on Saturday afternoon by posting a high-speed of 109.233 miles per hour during qualifying. It’s his first pole win in nine career NASCAR Nationwide Series race attempts.

Allmendinger will start in Row 1 alongside Owen Kelly, who is making his second-career Nationwide Series start. Both have come at Road America, a road track in which only six of the drivers qualified for this year’s race have ever competed.

Allmendinger is participating in his first NNS race since 2008. Like Kelly, his experience on road courses earned him a call for the unique Elkhart Lake, Wisc., race.

Austin Dillon’s streak of four consecutive Nationwide poles ended on Saturday, by the way, as Dillon placed 14th in qualifying. NNS points leader Regan Smith will start 16th.
