NASCAR at Charlotte 2014: Will rain chances cause playoff problems for NASCAR

Showers threaten Charlotte Motor Speedway this weekend, but how big of a threat is the rain for NASCAR?

The weather forecast for this weekend’s NASCAR races at Charlotte Motor Speedway is a tricky one. We have a stalled front that will slowly slide south today into Saturday and Saturday night. This front could be the focal point for scattered showers and thunderstorms around the Charlotte Metro area. The questions is, “How could the rain, if any impact this weekend’s race?”

I give the odds of racing this weekend for both the Nationwide race tonight and the Sprint Cup series race tomorrow night around 75 percent with the possibility of delays. I don’t see it as a washout since we are looking at scattered showers and possible thunderstorms but there could be enough for a rain delay or two.

Stalled to slow moving fronts are very challenging to forecast. Fifty miles can mean the difference between seeing rain and not seeing rain. Tonight and Saturday night we will need to keep an eye to the sky and also on the radar as rain and storms will be around Charlotte Motor Speedway.
