Kurt Busch’s ex-girlfriend, Patricia Driscoll, said the NASCAR driver struggled with alcoholism and depression and flew into a fit of unprovoked rage the night he allegedly attacked her, according to the Associated Press.

Kurt Busch’s ex-girlfriend testified for six hours Tuesday as she seeks a protective order against the former NASCAR champion.

In an emotional testimony in a Dover (Del.) courtroom, Driscoll broke down crying during her six hours on the witness stand, necessitating a recess. Busch’s attorney, Rusty Hardin, characterized Driscoll in court as a public relations expert determined to ruin Busch’s career following a messy breakup of their four-year relationship, according to the Wilmington News Journal.
During her testimony, Driscoll said Busch was critical of his Stewart-Haas Racing team, called them “idiots” and said he would not re-sign with the organization after his two-year contract expired.

The 2004 NASCAR champion also condemned SHR co-owner Tony Stewart for his involvement in the death of driver Kevin Ward Jr. during an Aug. 9 sprint car race in upstate New York. Stewart’s car struck an on-foot Ward with its right-rear wheel. A grand jury cleared Stewart of any wrongdoing.
“He was angry that Tony Stewart had killed that kid and ruined his entire career,” Driscoll said.
The hearing for the protective order, which prevents Busch from contacting Driscoll or her young son, will resume Wednesday.
Driscoll is seeking the order following allegations Busch assaulted her Sept. 26 at Dover International Speedway. She alleges Busch -- upset after qualifying poorly for that weekend’s race -- threatened to kill himself before grabbing her face and then smashing her head against the wall three times in his motor home.
Dover police are continuing to investigate the incident. Cpl. Mark Hoffman told SB Nation Tuesday there is no timetable when the investigation will conclude or when a determination will be made on whether charges should be filed.
Through his attorney, Busch has denied any wrongdoing. He did not speak to reporters following his appearance in court Tuesday.
