Daytona 500 2014 live results: Paul Menard leads 100 laps in

Menard was in good position halfway through the Great American Race.

Andrew Weber-USA TODAY Sports

After a rain delay lasting more than six hours, Paul Menard led the Daytona 500 midway through the Great American Race.

Menard led 27 of the first 100 laps. That’s not necessarily a good thing. Davey Allison was the last driver to lead at the midway point and go on to win the race ... in 1992.

Rain was always a possibility, but NASCAR was able to get the race started before storms came through from the west. Light rain resulted in a red flag on the 38th lap, but weather only grew worse as the afternoon went on and fans were forced to evacuate when a tornado warning was issued.

Kyle Busch continued to lead after the race was resumed, but he picked up a penalty during a green-flag stop on pit road on the 84th lap. He pulled away with the air gun still attached to his car and was dinged for removing equipment from the pit stall. He served a stop-and-go penalty and now runs in 34th position.

Menard, Kevin Harvick, Jimmie Johnson, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Joey Logano were the top five at the 100-lap mark. Jimmie Johnson is trying to become first driver since Sterling Marlin (1994-95) to win consecutive Daytona 500s.
