A driver named ‘Gordon’ driving the No. 3?

Austin Dillon shared an unusual discovery while signing autographs Wednesday.

What’s one name you never thought you would see on the iconic No. 3 car?

At or near the top of the list would be the last name “Gordon.” That is the surname of Jeff Gordon, a four-time NASCAR champion who has become as conjoined with the No. 24 as Dale Earnhardt was to the No. 3.

For those unaware of the significance of the No. 3, it was Earnhardt’s car number for the majority of his career. And following his death on the final lap of the 2001 Daytona 500 the No. 3 was absent from NASCAR’s premiere series for the next 12 years.

But with much fanfare -- and some consternation -- Earnhardt’s best friend and longtime car owner Richard Childress decided to bring back the No. 3 this season for his grandson Austin Dillon. And it was Dillon, a Sprint Cup rookie, who tweeted an usual sight Wednesday morning discovered while signing autographs.

(Hint: Look closely at the names on the windshields.)
