Muppets ‘Gonzo’ to serve as grand marshal at NASCAR race

NASCAR prides itself on being a dare-devilish sport, so who better to serve as grand marshal for next week’s race at Fontana then a “real” daredevil himself.

When NASCAR travels to Southern California for its annual race at Auto Club Speedway it’s a familiar sight to see a Hollywood star or two milling about.

This year is no exception. In fact, the March 23 Auto Club 400 might feature the biggest star to ever grace a NASCAR race. OK, not really, but it will certainly be entertaining as The Great Gonzo will be in attendance.

Best known as the Muppet with an unusually long nose and an affinity for chickens and daredevil antics, Gonzo will serve as grand marshal and give the “Drivers, start your engines” command the track announced Thursday.

“Going around in circles as fast as possible is how I got my start,” Gonzo said in a statement. “So it’s a real honor to be named grand marshal of this year’s Auto Club 400. For me, it’s right up there with sword-juggling, bog-snorkeling and competitive dentistry.”

Gonzo will be promoting the film Muppets Most Wanted, which hits theaters nationally March 21. No word on whether Kermit The Frog or Fozzie Bear will be joining their co-star at Fontana.
