Vision restored, Denny Hamlin cleared to race at Martinsville

A piece of metal was discovered in Denny Hamlin’s eye, which is what caused the driver to experience blurred vision and miss Sunday’s race at Auto Club Speedway.

Denny Hamlin is clear to return to competition this weekend at Martinsville Speedway after missing Sunday’s Auto Club 400, Joe Gibbs Racing said in a release Wednesday.

Originally Hamlin was thought to have a sinus infection, which was causing his vision to be blurred. He visited the infield care center at Auto Club Speedway Saturday night and again the following morning when his condition worsened. Doctors then recommended he go to a local hospital for further evaluation and would not clear him to race.

Sam Hornish Jr. drove the No. 11 car to a 17th-place finish.

At the hospital, doctors discovered a small piece of metal in Hamlin’s eye. Once removed, the 33-year-old felt “immediate improvement to his condition,” according to JGR. He was released from the hospital Sunday afternoon and given the OK to fly back to Charlotte, N.C.

Hamlin visited a doctor Monday and had a follow-up examination Wednesday. NASCAR has approved Hamlin to “resume all racing activity without restriction,” the team said.
