2014 NASCAR at Martinsville Speedway race day weather forecast: Yes we race today

After rain cancelled all track activities on Saturday, Sunday looks to be drier but there could be a few weather issues.

There have been a lot of conflicting weather forecasts out there for Martinsville Speedway. Some say it will be wet in the afternoon, others have rain into the mid afternoon clearing by evening and then there are others that say we have rain this morning but start to clear out late morning to around midday. The later is my weather forecast for Martinsville Speedway for today’s Sprint Cup race.

WILL IT RAIN TODAY? Morning rain showers are expected over Martinsville Speedway. I am anticipating the rain to start to exit and end over the track sometime between 10 a.m. EDT and 12 p.m. EDT. If the rain ends closer to noon than 10 a.m. then there might be a delay to the scheduled start time due to drying. Any drying will be aided by very strong northwesterly winds. By the afternoon it will be windy, clouds will clear and it will be chilly.

WIND ADVISORY IN EFFECT: The local National Weather Service office has issued a Wind Advisory for Martinsville Speedway for the day today. Winds will be out of the northwest between 15 and 25 mph gusting 35 to 45 mph. This will help driving but could also make things brisk for fans and cause some issues for the cars on the track.

TRUCK RACE IS SCHEDULED AFTER THE SPRINT CUP RACE. WILL THEY GET BOTH IN? I am leaning towards yes. While there is a small chance of a delay to the start of the Sprint Cup race and sunset is at 7:40 p.m. EDT, overall I think the odds of seeing both races today are around 80 percent.
