Kurt Busch wins the 2014 STP 500 at Martinsville Speedway

Kurt Busch fends off Jimmie Johnson to win Sunday at Martinsville Speedway.

Jared C. Tilton

Kurt Busch passed Jimmie Johnson late to win the STP 500 Sunday at Martinsville Speedway.

Johnson, who owns eight Martinsville victories, had the dominant car throughout the afternoon, leading 11 times for 296 laps. But Busch powered underneath Johnson off Turn 2 with 10 laps and was never seriously challenged the rest of the way. It was Busch’s first victory in 83 races and the 25th of his career.

“I didn’t know if we’d be able to do it,” Busch said in Victory Lane. “The No. 48 car (Johnson) is king here. ... Every time you come to Martinsville you draw a line through it; like ‘there’s no way I’ll be able to challenge those Hendrick guys or challenge for a top-10.’”

Twelve drivers exchanged the lead a track-record 33 times. Fourteen cautions slowed the action for 92 laps.

Dale Earnhardt Jr., Joey Logano and Marcos Ambrose completed the top five finishers.
