Dale Earnhardt Jr. adds to race car graveyard

The car that Dale Earnhardt Jr. wrecked in a fiery crash earlier this year has met an unceremonious end.

Dale Earnhardt Jr.‘s infamous collection of destroyed race cars has a new addition.

The car that NASCAR’s most popular driver wrecked in a fiery, muddy crash two weeks ago at Texas Motor Speedway is now part of an odd assortment of vehicles scattered throughout Earnhardt’s North Carolina property. He tweeted a photo of the car Tuesday.

Earnhardt estimates he has upwards of 60 cars buried in the woods surrounding his house, creating what is essentially a graveyard for cars involved in memorable racing incidents.

The collection includes the car Juan Pablo Montoya crashed into a jet dryer to trigger an explosion during the 2012 Daytona 500. It also includes Will Power’s Indy car, which was involved in a 15-car wreck at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Power broke his back in the 2011 incident that claimed the life of Dan Wheldon, who won the Indianapolis 500 earlier in the year.

Earnhardt wrecked at Texas when he clipped the infield grass, damaging the nose of his Chevrolet and sending him shooting across the track into the wall. The contact triggered a fire, which quickly engulfed the rear of the car. Earnhardt stopped on the apron of Turn 2 and escaped uninjured.
