NASCAR Nationwide Series at Texas Motor Speedway results: Chase Elliott, 18, wins first Nationwide race

Chase Elliott, 18, scored a breakthrough victory Friday at Texas Motor Speedway.

Eighteen-year-old Chase Elliott claimed his first Nationwide Series victory Friday night at Texas Motor Speedway.

The son of NASCAR Hall of Famer Bill Elliott, Chase powered by teammate Kevin Harvick with 16 laps remaining to win his first race in just his sixth series start. Once he completed the pass, Elliott quickly distanced himself and was never challenged.

Harvick slid back to finish fourth behind Kyle Busch and Kyle Larson, 21, who won two weeks ago at Auto Club Speedway.

“I can’t believe it, just to have the opportunity to race at JR Motorsports, just to have this opportunity is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for any racer who wants to make it to the top,” Elliott said. “It just means the word for me to be here.”

The win was the culmination of a strong outing for JR Motorsports, which for the first time fielded four Nationwide entries Friday. Along with Elliott and Harvick, Dale Earnhardt Jr. finished fifth with Regan Smith seventh.

A rookie, Elliott is the second youngest winner in Nationwide history, nearly four months older than Joey Logano when he won in 2008 at Kentucky. With the victory, Elliott moved to the top of the points standings, holding a two-point lead over Smith.
