Joey Logano wins the 2014 Duck Commander 500 at Texas Motor Speedway

A last lap pass of Jeff Gordon gave Joey Logano the victory in the rain-delayed Duck Commander 500 at Texas Motor Speedway.

Logano was handily in the lead coming to the white flag when NASCAR called for a caution for debris left by the limping car of Kurt Busch, necessitating a green-white-checkered finish. Following pit stops Gordon, who had taken two tires, restarted first with Logano lined up third with four fresh tires.

Initially, Gordon was able to fend off Logano, but the 23-year-old had too much car and powered by the four-time Sprint Cup champion as they raced under the white flag. From there Logano never looked back and went on to win his first race of the season and the fourth of his career.

“The 24 (Gordon) was lucky enough to have a good enough restart with his older tires,” Logano said. “I was able to follow him through, get a second, get a run off of four, cross him over, get the lead. Then we get the win. Just awesome. We’ve been in contention every race this year to win these things.”

Kyle Busch finished third, followed by Brian Vickers and rookie Kyle Larson.

Logano is the seventh different winner in as many races this season, joining Dale Earnhardt Jr., Kevin Harvick, Brad Keselowski, Carl Edwards, Kyle Busch and Kurt Busch. The victory capped a dominating afternoon for Team Penske, with Logano and Brad Keselowski combining to lead 193 of 340 laps.

A runner-up moves Jeff Gordon to the top of the Sprint Cup standings for the first time since May 2009. He holds a four-point lead over Matt Kenseth entering next week’s race at Darlington Raceway. Dale Earnhardt Jr., who had the points leader into Texas, crashed early and finished last, 43rd.
