Nearly 10 months after a savage crash broke his leg, Tony Stewart returned to the seat of a sprint car Monday.

For first time since breaking his leg last August, Stewart took some laps in a sprint car.


The test took part at an undisclosed track with Stewart posting several photos of the session on his Twitter account, which just recently became active:

— Tony Stewart (@TonyStewart) May 27, 2014 The last time Stewart drove a sprint car was Aug. 5 in a race on an Iowa dirt track where an accident left him with a broken right leg in two places.
The three-time NASCAR champion missed the final 15 races of the Sprint Cup season. Although cleared to return to competition in the days leading to the 2014 Daytona, Stewart estimated his health at 65 percent. He said it would likely be another year before his injuries completely healed.
Stewart said in a tweet that safety improvements had been made to the sprint car to prevent a reoccurrence of the injury he suffered. When asked by former sprint car driver and current television analyst Brad Doty if he was nervous, Stewart said yes, “but it felt like an old pair of shoes”:
