Chevys are running hot under the Michigan sun this week: three Chevrolet SS’s -- driven by Kevin Harvick, Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt, Jr. -- led qualifying, with Harvick posting the fastest qualifying lap in NASCAR since April of 1987.

The Michigan International Speedway is running hotter than anything we’ve seen since Bill Elliott was in his prime, and the Quicken Loans 400 should only turn up the heat on Sunday.

Harvick -- who has three poles this season -- ran the loop at 204.557 MPH, besting the previous track record set in 2013 by about a half a mile per hour to continue the upward trend that started after the track was repaved in 2012. “This is one of those racetracks where you’re running fast, but you really can’t put it all in perspective, I guess, until you hit something,” Harvick told reporters. “It’s so wide, it’s so fast and so smooth, but you don’t really get that huge sensation of speed.”
It was Joey Logano who set the record last year with a run of 203.949 MPH, and he was hoping to replicated his success from last season before a flat tire took him out of the Nationwide race on Saturday. That let Paul Menard capture the checkered flag, his first in eight years. Menard will also be looking to find his way towards the front of the pack on Sunday for the Quicken Loans 400 from his starting spot of fifth.
