Jimmie Johnson wins the 2014 Quicken Loans 400 at Michigan International Speedway

The list of tracks where Jimmie Johnson hasn’t won was reduced following a victory Sunday at Michigan International Speedway.

Previously the 2-mile oval had vexed Johnson, one of five tracks where he was winless. But thanks to deft strategy and an ability to max his fuel mileage, Johnson was able to create distance between himself and second-place finisher Kevin Harvick.

Brad Keselowski finished third, Paul Menard was fourth and Kasey Kahne placed fifth. Jeff Gordon, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Kyle Larson, Joey Logano and Clint Bowyer completed positions six through 10.

Johnson was 0-for-24 prior to Sunday’s Quicken Loans 400 win. Chicagoland Speedway, Homestead-Miami Speedway, Kentucky Speedway and Watkins Glen International remain the only tracks where the defending Sprint Cup champion remains winless.

“We have figured out every way to lose this race,” Johnson said. “And today we were able to get it done.

“We’ve always talked about winning here and have been so close.”

The win continues a torrid stretch for Johnson and Hendrick Motorsports. Johnson has won three of the past four races, and it was the fifth in a row for Hendrick.

Overall, six of the top-10 finishers were powered by Hendrick engines.

“I think it is obvious that Hendrick Motorsports produces fast race cars,” Johnson said. “They build fast engines. It doesn’t matter if it is Stewart-Haas, or the Hendrick organization. We’re winning a lot of races, and running up front.”

Starting from the pole, Harvick led the most laps and was faster than Johnson in the closing stages. But a slow final pit stop cost Harvick track position that he never regained.

“The car was fast, just wound up on the wrong side of all the strategy,” Harvick said. “We finished second, and that’s it.”
