2014 NASCAR at Kentucky Speedway race day weather forecast

With showers and thunderstorms in the forecast for the 2014 Quaker State 400 at Kentucky Speedway, will history repeat itself washing out another Kentucky race?

The weather forecast for the Quaker State 400 at Kentucky Speedway is a challenging one. We will see rain showers and thunderstorms off and on today, but I also believe we will see racing too later tonight too.

While the forecast may seem similar to what we had last year when the race was forced to Sunday afternoon, it’s not the same kind of weather pattern. This year a disturbance is moving through the region this morning and into the afternoon, combined with the hot and muggy conditions showers and even a few heavy thunderstorms will form today. The good news it appears that most of the rain activity will take place during the afternoon and then start to diminish as go into the evening hours.

By race time, around 7:30 p.m. EDT, there could be a delay thanks to a shower or storm but the threat diminish with the loss of daytime heating. This should give us windows to go racing. I give the odds of racing tonight a little lower than yesterday but still holding around 70%. I also think with long enough breaks in the rain this evening we should see a complete race.

The challenge tonight is I do feel like we are walking a narrow line between racing and possible washout. It only takes one or two slow moving storms at the wrong time and wrong place to make a dry forecast wet.
