Tony Stewart wins in sprint car return

Nearly a year after breaking his leg, Tony Stewart won in his first sprint car race Friday night.

Tony Stewart is back driving a sprint car and in typical fashion he did so emphatically winning Friday night at Tri-City Motor Speedway in Auburn, Mich.

The victory was Stewart’s first of any kind since breaking his leg in two places in a winged sprint car crash last August at Southern Iowa Speedway. The injury caused the three-time NASCAR champion to miss the final 15 Sprint Cup races of the season.

Stewart doesn’t typically announce when and where he’ll be competing, and judging from numerous social media posts his appearance was unexpected Friday night. He returned to the seat of sprint car in May taking part in a test at an undisclosed location. When asked about future plans to race, Stewart wouldn’t elaborate.

“I will be able to tell you how (the race) went, let’s put it that way,” Stewart said in June. “You won’t know when it’s coming. When I do go nobody is going to know about it. I’m going to just slide in and do it. I want to enjoy it.”

NASCAR’s top division is off this weekend, the final break in the schedule before a run of 17 consecutive races to end the year. Through 19 Cup races Stewart is 19th in points with six top-10s and a best finish of fourth at Bristol Motor Speedway.
