2014 NASCAR Brickyard 400 race weekend weather forecast: Chance of scattered storms

Heat and humidity will be in place this weekend and with that moisture, areas of scattered showers and storms are possible. Will any of these storms cause problems for NASCAR at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway?

The weekend weather forecast for Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the Brickyard 400 is one that will be hot and humid and also with a chance of scattered showers and storms both Saturday and Sunday. There is also a chance of strong to severe storms during the weekend.

Saturday will feature partly to mostly cloudy skies and hot and humid temperatures. While there is a chance of a pop up storm or two during the morning and afternoon, the real and best threat for storms will be Saturday evening and during the overnight. These storms could produce strong to severe storms that produce damaging winds and large hail. Highs for Saturday will be around the upper 80s to near 90.

WILL RAIN CAUSE PROBLEMS FOR THE NATIONWIDE RACE SATURDAY AFTERNOON? - Odd of completing the Nationwide race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway Saturday afternoon is around 60 to 70 percent. I think an official race is likely, which means they will get to half way or beyond, but as we get more into the evening hours the threat of storms increase. At this time, storm arrival Saturday evening looks to be between 6 and 8 p.m. EDT.

CAN NASCAR SPRINT CUP RACE ON SUNDAY? Storms from Saturday night and early Sunday morning should move out before morning. There could be a few lingering showers and storms but it appears the start of the day Sunday will be dry. The Sprint Cup Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway is scheduled around 1 p.m. EDT. The odds of racing Sunday afternoon are around 75 percent but there could be delays with scattered showers and storms forming during the afternoon. I am not ruling out a possible delay due to a storm but I think we can get a full race if not an official race. This forecast continues to be a work in progress so expect several updates.
