One of the first on the track during the final round of qualifying Thursday, Matt Kenseth wasted little time putting down a lap (194.532) good enough to earn him the pole for Saturday night’s Sprint Cup race at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
NASCAR Charlotte 2015 qualifying results: Matt Kenseth, Kyle Busch give Joe Gibbs Racing front row sweep
Kenseth earned his fourth pole of the season in qualifying for Saturday night’s race.

The pole was Kenseth’s fourth of 2015, setting a personal single-season career-high. Joe Gibbs Racing’s Kyle Busch will start alongside Kenseth for what is the first Round 2 race in the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship playoff. Joey Logano, Greg Biffle and Denny Hamlin completed the top-five.
“It was a heck of a lap and I knew it had a lot of speed,” Kenseth said. “Our (car)has been really fast all day. It was a lot of fun to drive. We only did qualifying, we have 500 miles on Saturday, but it was a lot of fun today.”
Completing the top-10 were Kurt Busch, Jimmie Johnson, Carl Edwards, Aric Almirola and Ryan Newman. Defending Sprint Cup champion and race-winner Kevin Harvick qualified 11th, with Dale Earnhardt Jr. 12th.
Of the top-12 qualifiers, Biffle, Johnson, Almirola are the only drivers not in the Chase playoff.
Other Chase drivers will start: Brad Keselowski (13th), Martin Truex Jr. (15th) and Jeff Gordon (22nd). Keselowski tied with Edwards to advance to the final round, but because Edwards scored more Round 1 points he earned the tiebreaker.
“We just guessed wrong on the track,” Kenseth said. “We thought it was going to go one way and it went the opposite. Our first run we were kind of caught out and had to make big adjustments. You will have that sometimes.”
A frustrated Tony Stewart took to social media to vent his frustration after qualifying 36th. The three-time Cup Series champion, who last week announced he will retire following the 2016 season, is in the middle of a pronounced slump ranked 25th in points and with a best finish of sixth through 29 races this year.
“Totally F ing embarrassed about tonight,” Stewart posted on Twitter. “Something has to change.”
Josh Wise and Timmy Hill failed to qualify.
