In a season plagued by inclement weather, fittingly NASCAR’s championship finale was delayed over an hour following an early afternoon shower Sunday at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
NASCAR championship race delayed by rain
Rain caused over an hour delay to Sunday’s championship finale.
The final event of the Chase for the Sprint Cup playoff features Kevin Harvick, Jeff Gordon, Kyle Busch and Martin Truex Jr. competing in a de facto winner-take-all race for the series championship. Homestead is also Gordon’s last race, as the four-time champion is retiring from full-time competition.
The Ford EcoBoost 400 was originally set to start at 3:15 p.m. ET, but did not take the green flag until 4:40 ET.
Non-Chasers Denny Hamlin and Joey Logano start first and second, respectively. Of the four title contenders Busch qualified best, fourth, with Gordon fifth, Truex 11th and Harvick 13th.
Homestead is the ninth race of the season to be hampered by Mother Nature. Atlanta (March), Bristol (April), Richmond (April), Kansas (May), Daytona (July) and Charlotte (October) incurred either significant delays or outright postponements to the following day due to rain. Heavy thunderstorms forced officials to call the June Michigan race 62 laps short of the scheduled distance and last week’s Chase elimination race at Phoenix International Raceway 93 a lap short.
