Joey Logano’s tough week continued with a tire failure during the race at Texas Motor Speedway on Sunday, placing him on the brink of elimination from the Chase for the Sprint Cup playoffs.
Joey Logano suffers tire failure as title hopes take further hit at Texas
A punctured tire knocked Logano out of contention just 10 laps into Sunday’s race.

Logano was running fourth when the left-rear tire exploded on the No. 22 car causing him to spin entering Turn 3. The incident occurred just 10 laps into the 500-mile race, the second of three events in the Chase’s semifinal round. Because of the considerable damage incurred, Logano headed to the garage for extensive repairs before eventually returning to completion multiple laps down.
“It just blew apart off of Turn 2,” Logano said. “The left rear tire came apart and shredded everything inside the car. It did a lot more damage than just the tire blowing apart. I don’t know. We needed to win.”
Having been deliberately crashed by Matt Kenseth last week at Martinsville Speedway, Logano entered Texas in virtually a must-win situation if he wanted to advance to the championship bracket. Logano will now need to win Phoenix next weekend to qualify for the Nov. 22 season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
“It isn’t about points for us, points don’t mean anything right now,” Logano said. “It is all about wins. That was our goal today going into the race.”
Logano swept all three Round 2 races and was leading Martinsville with 45 laps remaining when Kenseth, 10 laps behind, took him out retaliating for an incident between the two last month.
