Denny Hamlin’s No. 11 car got faster as the week went on, and he had the best pit crew at Charlotte Motor Speedway on Saturday. The Sprint All-Star Race was created to reward both. Making their move not under green flag but under yellow, the Joe Gibbs’ Racing team made it out of the pits first following a mandatory four-tire stop and used that clean air to cruise to an easy victory across the final 10 laps of the night.

The victory was both Hamlin’s and JGR’s first in the All-Star Race. Hamlin earned a cool $1 million for the win. Kevin Harvick finished second, nearly a second behind Hamlin, with Kurt Busch third, Jeff Gordon fourth in his final All-Star Race and Matt Kenseth fifth.

Hamlin had the fifth-best time during practice on Friday, but made his real move in qualifying before the race. Qualifying forced teams to take a mandatory four-tire stop after the third of four laps, and gave the added bonus of having no speed limit on pit row. Many cars slid right through their pit box, and Hamlin’s was no different. But quick thinking, putting the car in reverse even before it stopped, helped Hamlin get his car back in the box and allowed his team to do its job. The result: Hamlin had the best lap and his pit crew had the best time of any of the 20 teams, allowing him to sit on the pole and choose his pit box.

After 100 laps of the All-Star Race, drivers were again required to make a four-tire stop. Teams entered pit row in an order based on their average finish in the prior four 25-lap segments. Hamlin’s average finish was 6.5. He entered the pits sixth. Brad Keselowski’s average was 2.5 after winning the second and third segments. He nearly edged Hamlin off pit row, but didn’t, and it wouldn’t have mattered anyway. Keselowski was clocked a third of a mile per hour faster than allowed, and sent to the back of the pack.

Off the restart, Hamlin started on the inside of the front row. He shot out to the lead and was never seriously challenged for it, although Harvick had a pretty good line and ran a few fast laps behind him.

Kasey Kahne won the first segment, and Kurt Busch the fourth one.
