NASCAR Kansas 2015 qualifying results: Joey Logano wins Spongebob Squarepants 400 pole

Joey Logano will lead the field to the green flag in Saturday night’s NASCAR race.

Carl Edwards was fastest in Round 1 and Martin Truex Jr. was fastest in Round 2, but when it mattered the most Joey Logano was fastest in Round 3 to capture the pole Friday in qualifying at Kansas Speedway.

Logano’s speed (192.397 mph) gave him his fourth No. 1 starting position of the season. His previous poles came at Atlanta Motor Speedway, Martinsville Speedway and Richmond International Speedway and in each race Logano would go on to finish no worse than fifth.

“Last year it took us pretty much the whole year to get one pole and we won a lot of first and second sessions and would fall on our face in the third session,” said Logano, who won at Kansas last October. “It is good to figure out the third session and have speed in our car when we get there. You don’t get anything for winning the first and second round. That is what I figured out last year.”

Kasey Kahne is on the outside of Row 2 for Saturday night’s Spongebob Squrepants 400. Starting third is Brad Keselowski, Logano’s Team Penske teammate, followed by Truex and Edwards.

Kevin Harvick -- whose streak of three consecutive Kansas poles ended -- is sixth. Completing the top-10 qualifiers were Greg Biffle, Kurt Busch, Jamie McMurray and Kyle Larson, respectively.

Defending race winner Jeff Gordon qualified 11th. Erik Jones will line up 12th in his official Sprint Cup debut after being fastest in final practice. The 18-year-old drove in relief for teammate Denny Hamlin April 19 at Bristol Motor Speedway, but Hamlin received credit because he was the driver of record.

Jones is subbing for Kyle Busch, who broke his right leg and left foot Feb. 21 in an accident during the Xfinity Series race at Daytona International Speedway. No definite date is set for Busch’s return.

“It was a little disappointing because we’d run better laps in our first two rounds, but we just tried to make an adjustment there to take a stab at trying to go faster,” Jones said. “It just didn’t work out. We have a good racecar.”

Brendan Gaughan failed to qualify.
