Kyle Busch returned to NASCAR Xfinity Series competition in a big way, winning his first start Saturday at Michigan International Speedway since sustaining serious injuries in a February accident.

Busch broke his right leg and left foot when he struck an unprotected concrete wall during the Feb. 21 Xfinity race at Daytona International Speedway. He was out of action until last month when the Joe Gibbs Racing driver resumed running the Sprint Cup Series, with Saturday his first event in NASCAR’s No. 2 division.

“It feels good,” Busch said. “This is only a preliminary for what we’ve got to do on Sundays (in Cup races), but it’s a start. You’ve got to start somewhere, right?”

The win was Busch’s 71st career Xfinity win. Chase Elliott finished second, with Kyle Larson, Chris Buescher and Elliott Sadler third through fifth, respectively.

It appeared either pole-sitter Joey Logano or Kevin Harvick were going to score the Michigan victory, as they sparred for the lead with fewer than 10 laps remaining in the 125-lap race. But Harvick overdrove entering Turn 3 and slid up into Logano on Lap 117, handing the lead to Elliott. Busch then completed the winning pass of Elliott with three laps to go.

Harvick fell back to finish sixth, Logano seventh. Harvick apologized for the contact afterward, saying he was merely going hard for the win. Logano was less than understanding.

“It just seems like he drove in there pretty hard trying to slide me,” Logano said. “I drove up in there too and he got loose underneath me and got into my left rear and up we both went into the race track. It is unfortunate.

“I was racing hard and he just drove over his head a little bit.”
