A.J. Allmendinger may have apologized, but it wasn’t enough to stop Ryan Newman from promising he would seek retribution following an incident during Sunday’s Axalta 400 at Pocono Raceway.
Ryan Newman vows payback after A.J. Allmendinger causes accident
An accident caused by AJ Allmendinger left Ryan Newman asserting revenge.
The two were racing side-by-side for the seventh position with 22 laps remaining when Allmendinger slid up the track and clipped the rear of Newman’s car, sending him spinning into the outside wall. Due to the significant damage incurred, Newman finished 39th.
Allmendinger immediately expressed contriteness for the accident, radioing his team: “That’s my bad. My fault.” He explained his car lost grip and that’s why he drifted into Newman, who was having none of Allmendinger’s apology.
“It’s pretty obvious what happened,” Newman told reporters when asked what happened. “(Allmendinger) just ran out of talent. He has got one coming now.”
Further adding to the tension is that while Allmendinger and Newman drive for different organizations, they essentially operate as de-facto teammates. Allmendinger’s single-car JTG Daugherty Racing team has a technical alliance with Richard Childress Racing, which fields three full-time cars including Newman’s No. 31. Additionally, RCR provides JTG Daugherty with its engines.
Allmendinger didn’t escape Sunday’s incident unscathed. His No. 47 car broke a radiator due to the contact, resulting in a 38th-place finish.
“Hard racing,” Allmendinger tweeted. “Got loose and wrecked the 31. I would never intentionally do it. What RCR does for our team is hard to put into words...”
