The hood on Denny Hamlin’s No. 11 car came loose and smashed into his windshield just minutes into the second round of practice on Friday at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Practice was stopped after Denny Hamlin’s hood became dislodged and hit his windshield, scattering debris over the track.
Hamlin was running at speed when the incident occurred and the impact shattered the carbon fiber hood, scattering debris over the track and necessitating a red flag. The Joe Gibbs Racing driver was able to slowly navigate his way to the garage for repairs.
“It just absolutely blew apart -- the whole hood,” Hamlin radioed to his team. “The whole hood is gone. It killed the windshield. It killed everything. It’s torn to all hell.”

— XFINITY Racing (@XFINITYRacing) July 24, 2015 Replays showed the hood pins were not properly fastened. In addition to the hood, Hamlin also suffered windshield and roof damage. The No. 11 team made repairs with Hamlin returning to the track after approximately 50 minutes in the garage.
Hamlin had posted the fastest speed (182.208 mph) in Friday’s first practice session. Dale Earnhardt Jr. (181.466 mph) was the quickest in the second practice.
