NASCAR weather forecast for postponed races Sunday at Charlotte

Hurricane Mathew, off the coast of the Carolinas, forced NASCAR to postpone the Sprint Cup and Xfinity races to Sunday. Weather looks a whole lot better.

Hurricane Mathew made landfall Saturday morning near McClellanville, SC shortly after 11 a.m. ET. It was a Category 1 hurricane with winds near 75 mph. With Matthew along the North and South Carolina coasts Saturday NASCAR made the decision to postpone both Xfinity Series and Sprint Cup Series races to Sunday starting at noon. The Xfinity series race will follow the Bank of America 500 Sprint Cup race.

While rain may decrease across the Charlotte area Saturday afternoon and evening between 5 and 8 p.m. the decision by NASCAR was the right call. With Hurricane Mathew along the North Carolina coast later this evening and many fans living in the affected areas, this decision was about safety.

Weather for both races on Sunday looks spectacular. There will be a slight breeze of 10 to 20 mph out of the north but there will be plenty of sun and pleasant temperatures in the 70s.

I continue to work with meteorologist Aaron Studwell (@RaceWeather on Twitter) on this forecast. This is not an easy forecast and we may be making adjustments all the way up to the start of the race.
