NASCAR Phoenix 2016 results: Full finishing order for Can-Am 500

Kevin Harvick comes up short of transferring to the final Chase round, the first time he’s failed to do so since NASCAR went to an elimination format.

Kevin Harvick will not advance to the championship round of the Chase for the Sprint Cup for a third consecutive year, after failing to win Sunday’s semifinal elimination race at Phoenix International Raceway.

Also not transferring were Matt Kenseth, Denny Hamlin and Kurt Busch. Kenseth was in the best position to move forward, leading the Can-Am 500 on a restart with two laps remaining. But contact with Alex Bowman sent Kenseth into the outside, essentially ending any chance he had of qualifying for next weekend’s championship race.

Joey Logano won the Can-Am 500, followed by Kyle Busch, the defending series champion, and Kyle Larson.

Jimmie Johnson, Carl Edwards, Logano, and Busch are the four drivers earning title-round berths. Johnson, Edwards and Logano advanced by virtue of winning in the three-race semifinal bracket, while Busch claimed the fourth spot with the most points without a victory among the eight Chase drivers.

“It was a very challenging Chase for us for all the mechanical failures and situations that we had going on,” Harvick said. “We kept rebounding and winning races and today we were a lap down and came back to have a chance at the end. That says a lot about the character of our race team and we just came up short this year.”

Below the cutoff by a substantial 18 points, Harvick entered Phoenix in a de facto must-win situation. Winning seemed a plausible scenario considering he had won six of the past eight races on the one-mile track, but the 2014 Sprint Cup champion uncharacteristically struggled for much of the afternoon -- for one extended period not even running inside the top-10 due to a badly handling car.

Harvick would recover in the latter stages and rallied to a fourth-place finish, but it wasn’t enough. He had been the only driver to advance to the Chase’s final round since the knockout format was instituted prior to the 2014 season.

“We had a chance and could take a swing for it,” Harvick said. “We just didn’t quite have it all weekend. We made the car a ton better as we got into the race. So I’m proud of everyone for that.”

Johnson, Edwards, Logano and Busch will decide the championship Nov. 20 at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
