NASCAR at Talladega 2016 race day weather: Could be a bumpy afternoon

The NASCAR Geico 500 at Talladega has a chance of scattered rain and storms, but doesn’t look like a washout. How could rain still impact Sunday’s Sprint Cup race?

It may be race day for the Sprint Cup Geico 500 at Talladega Superspeedway, but the forecast still remains complicated. Scattered to isolated areas of showers and storms are possible around Talladega Superspeedway Sunday afternoon. That doesn’t equal a Sunday washout but weather delays are definitely possible.

CAN WE RACE SUNDAY?
I feel there’s enough confidence in the current forecast and the data I’ve been looked at all week to say yes, NASCAR can race the Geico 500. Odds of racing are around 60 to 70 percent.

WILL IT BE A COMPLETE OR AN OFFICIAL RACE?
The odds of getting to just beyond the halfway point are still around 60 to 70 percent. Odds of a complete race are around 45 to 55 percent. Given the scattered nature of any developing showers or storms Sunday afternoon, it’s possible we could go the distance, but I am preparing for the worst and hoping for the best.

ANY DELAYS?
I am going to say we should see at least one delay, if not more. Could the race go without a rain delay? It’s possible, but given the uncertainty of timing and location of rain development, it’s best to expect some delays due to weather.

All week I’ve been working with my weather colleague, meteorologist Aaron Studwell of @RaceWeather on Twitter and Raceweather.net. This is our second full season collaborating on weather forecasts and despite all the uncertainty all week long we have remain on message. That message, while we expect showers and storms around all afternoon Sunday, is that we have felt cautiously optimistic we could race Sunday. That hasn’t changed, but if anything changes we will be keeping you up to date all afternoon.
