2016 NASCAR All-Star race weather forecast: It’s wet but how wet

The forecast for this weekend’s Truck Series race and NASCAR All-Star race gives meteorologists nightmares. Rain is likely the next couple of days but the questions is, can and will they race?

NASCAR returns home for two weeks at Charlotte Motor Speedway, unfortunately Mother Nature is not providing the best homecoming weather for the NASCAR Truck Series and the Sprint Cup Series. Rain showers and storms are possible Thursday through Saturday with some days and nights being wetter than others.

Thursday will feature a chance of rain during the afternoon. This is a tough forecast, it just comes down to the timing of when showers or storms hit the track. Showers and storms could impact Truck series practice and in some scenarios cancel it. Radar watching will be the trend all afternoon. Temperatures will be cool in the low 60s. Odds of Truck series practice Thursday is around 55 to 60 percent

The wettest day of the All-Star weekend looks to be Friday. Odds of racing or any practicing are 30 percent or less. They might be able to get some practice and qualifying in, but as the day wears on the threat of showers and storms increases. For t he truck race and the Sprint Showdown I’d say the likelihood of getting those in is around 20 percent. It looks more like a washout for Friday night.

Saturday starts off wet but slowly improves as we head into the evening. While it may improve and the threat of rain decreases, the atmosphere remains moist and that keeps the unfortunate threat of drizzle, mist and a few showers around. This makes this forecast terribly difficult. I think they can get the NASCAR Sprint Cup All-Star race ran but with possible delays. My odds of racing Saturday night are cautiously optimistic around 50 to 60 percent chance of racing the All-Star race.

This forecast could change. To be honest, I don’t feel all that confident but it is in agreement with my colleague meteorologist Aaron Studwell or @RaceWeather on Twitter who I work with during the season.
