Weather update for NASCAR Coca-Cola 600: Any improvement for Sunday night?

Tropical Storm Bonnie continues to churn along the South Carolina coast near Charleston. Scattered showers are still possible this evening but it looks like an improving situation. Radar as of 1:50 pm ET Sunday is mostly dry over Charlotte Motor Speedway but with bands of showers to the east and southeast of Charlotte.

CLT Radar Sunday

It looks like these bands will move into the area by late afternoon and early evening but that activity could weaken and diminish before reaching the track. That would be great news for the Coca-Cola 600 later this evening.

CAN WE RACE SUNDAY?
As the afternoon wears on I am growing more optimistic than I was earlier Sunday morning. I am increasing the odds of racing Sunday night to 65-70 percent. It will come down to whether bands work across Charlotte Motor Speedway during the scheduled race time or not.

IF THEY RACE, CAN THEY GO THE DISTANCE?
If these showers break up or don’t make it to Charlotte Motor Speedway then yes, absolutely. Odds of getting a full race is around 60 percent.

WHAT IS MONDAY’S FORECAST?
The need for a Monday race is looking less likely but if needed Monday is a little drier with a chance of showers and storms. Rain will be more of the scattered-to-isolated nature as Bonnie slowly continues to move to the NNE along the North Carolina coast.

I continue to work with meteorologist Aaron Studwell (@RaceWeather) on this forecast. This is not an easy forecast and we may be making adjustments all the way up to the start of the Coca-Cola 600.
