2016 NASCAR at the Brickyard weather: More about heat than rain

High heat and humidity will make for an oppressive weekend at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The only relief could come in the form of scattered to isolated thunderstorms.

This week NASCAR runs the Brickyard 400 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The weather story is not about rain chances, although we have that in the forecast, but the heat and humidity. There is a heat advisory in place for Indianapolis until Saturday evening. The combination of daytime highs in the middle 90s, along with dew points getting into the middle 70s, means the heat index at times will be around 105 to 110. This puts a lot of stress on the body and staying hydrated and cool will be a must for fans at the track this weekend. Water will be a must, more than alcohol. Seek shade and it is recommended for fans to wear lightweight light-colored clothes out at the track.

Along with heat and humidity, this weekend comes the chance of showers and storms. There is plenty of moisture in the air ready and waiting to form showers and storms -- all it needs is a spark to get the activity going. There could be a few disturbances moving into Indiana that could spark showers and storms. It’s tough to pinpoint timing, so I’m going with scattered clusters of showers and storms through the Brickyard 400 weekend.

Because of the occasional threat of storms, racing odds are around 75 to 80 percent. While there could be a storm from time to time there will be plenty of dry time.
