Joey Logano, Kyle Busch meet with NASCAR to discuss Las Vegas post-race fight

Kyle Busch and Joey Logano met with NASCAR officials before Friday’s Cup Series practice session at Phoenix International Raceway to clear the air following a post-race skirmish last weekend at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

NASCAR called the two drivers together to ensure there would be no carryover after Logano caused Busch to spinout on the final lap of Sunday’s Kobalt 400, and Busch retaliated by punching Logano afterward on pit road resulting in a scrum that left Busch bloodied.

Friday’s meeting lasted approximately 15 minutes and was held inside the NASCAR hauler located inside Phoenix’s garage.

“I just tried to explain that, ‘Hey, I made a mistake underneath him,” Logano said. “That’s basically what it was. (Busch) asked for some data, and I was able to show him that. That’s that and we’ll move on and we’ll start practicing in a little bit.”

After striking Logano last weekend, Busch said in a national television interview that, “He’s going to get it.” NASCAR announced it would not penalize either driver on Wednesday, and officials are wanting to avoid a replay of a series of run-ins Logano had with Matt Kenseth two years ago where Kenseth deliberately wrecked Logano two weeks after the initial incident between the two.

Logano said Friday he wasn’t sure if Busch was still angered by Logano sliding up into him and causing him to spin at Las Vegas.

“I guess time will tell. We’ll see,” Logano said. “The only thing I could do in this case was plead my case and say that it was an honest mistake, it was hard racing at the end.”

Busch averted commenting on the meeting by answering every question from the assembled media by a variations of: “Everything is great. Really looking forward to getting back into my car and being here in Phoenix.”
